Austin, Texas: The capitol of Texas and home to the Longhorns and the national records of the old Republic of Texas. At one point, President Sam Houston ordered the capitol moved from Austin to Houston, citing Austin’s dangerous proximity to Mexican attacks. Although the capital was moved, the residents of Austin vowed to keep the national records in Austin, and formed a vigilance committee that would protect the records with force. To avoid a conflict, Sam Houston sent government forces to capture the records under the cover of night. One lady resident noticed the invasion and discharged a cannon (which then smashed into a nearby building) to wake the town. Austin forces then ran down country officials and regained control over the records. Weird? Yeah. Maybe that is why they have “Keep Austin Weird” stickers.
